A narrow question...

...but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. Anyone was experience both with TiVo and the new DirecTV branded HD DVRs. Since I'm shut out of many channels by having the former, I'm thinking of jumping to the latter. In a way this makes me feels dirty, liked those who bailed on the Mac from Windows in the pre-Steve Jobs era. Any advice?

My dad got one of the new DTV DVRs just yesterday.

My impression: it's not as polished as the older HD TiVo unit, and it's quite slow to change channels. Very slow in fact, even compared to my Dish Network HD DVR.

That said, it can integrate with your home network to some extent, including reading media files from a PC (not sure about Mac support).

Setting up events, recording, rewinding etc are all fairly standardized by now, but the menus, guides, and setup screens just aren't as polished as the Tivo (or Dish for that matter).

Speaking of yesterday, I just got a notice on DirecTV that they are going to cut off all HD local MPEG-2 channels in LA, thus forcing my hand. I'm tempted to switch to Dish, or at least to consider it, but I'm worried that their on going battles with TiVo could pull the plug on the DVR service.

I just found a way for my Xbox to pull media from my Mac, even HD podcasts. A beautiful thing.
